I would like to say I respect your decision to give the child up for adoption. Adoption is a great thing not only for the child, but for the family adopting. You’re helping someone who either can’t have children of their own, or would rather adopt since there are so many children without homes. Either way, giving up the baby for adoption is a great choice. I understand that adoption is just as hard, and sometimes as heartbreaking as abortion, considering you carried and provided for the baby for 9 months and then it’s just taken away from you. Even though you could’ve prevented the pregnancy, what happened, happened and there’s nothing that can change that now. It would’ve been smart to consider the consequences of what you were doing, though; especially since you’re only a junior in high school. Maybe it’s the school’s fault for not informing you fully on safe ways to prevent pregnancy and how becoming a teen parent affects your future.
I feel like if you’re not an age or if you aren’t mature enough to go out and buy your own condoms or birth control, then you shouldn’t be having sex. This is because, if you aren’t ready to go out and get your own contraceptives, then you obviously aren’t ready to raise a child. Children require so much care and love, that you really have to be at a point in your life where you know you are capable of providing them with everything they need, and most teenagers and young adults haven’t reached this point yet. I feel like a lot of teen pregnancies can be prevented through better sex education in school. With a full sex-education program in all high schools we can give students all the information that they obviously need. Programs like these in schools not only would teen pregnancy rates drop, but so would teenage abortion rates.
Getting an abortion is hard decision that requires a lot of thought and a lot of support from friends and/or family members. Every woman has the right to an abortion, whether she will get one or not, it’s important that she is allowed the right to choose. Abortions are really hard to go through for any woman, and it is a very emotional decision. When a woman chooses to have an abortion, she feels that this is the absolute right decision for her, and no one should judge her or try to stop her because of their conflicting beliefs. In your case, having an abortion obviously wasn’t the best choice for you, but you knew you wouldn’t be able to raise a child, therefore you gave it up for adoption. No matter what someone chooses to do, abortion or adoption, we have to understand that the mother believes that it is the absolute best choice for her and the child. Anyone who disrespects a woman’s choice to have an abortion needs to realize that 1.) No one is saying you need to have an abortion, 2.) The world has enough children in orphanages and foster-care, and 3.) Being pregnant while you’re in high school or college is extremely hard on the woman and they would most likely have to take time off and end up falling behind.
I think you made the best decision for yourself and the baby because you knew exactly what you were capable of. Maybe if the girl in front of the clinic hadn’t told you about the fingernails, then you would’ve gone through with the abortion. But you decided not to and ended up giving the baby to a loving mother who has wanted a child for a long time. You know you made the right decision and that’s all that matters now.
